Today’s episode is a conscious exploration of what it means to be spiritual.
I get so many questions on this topic, and I thought why not answer this question in this podcast.
Because I want to make you aware of a dark side to the spiritual movement.
It needs to be spoken about and addressed!
This is based on what I’ve noticed in certain Facebook groups about Spirituality that I’m part of..
And I’m sure that you’re going to find this episode useful on your journey ahead, especially when discussing this topic with friends and family.
Now this might ruffle some weathers,
but I gotta take a stand here for the future of Action tribe.
What is spirituality?
Each of you might have a different understanding, but to me spirituality is recognizing that you are of spirit.
And that you’re not just this physical body that comprises of you brain, your bones, flesh and blood.
You are more than just that!
You are a spiritual being 🙂
And because you’re made of energy, you cannot be created not can be destroyed.
You are infinite and everlasting.
Is this good?
One would say, of course this is good. This is amazing!
Because you realize that you are MORE than just physical.
You have the power to create your own future and that his isn’t your first nor your last lifetime.
It’s freeing and empowering, right?…
There’s a challenge though.
As the spiritual movement grows larger and larger, there’s a danger of these ideas of becoming so concrete and rigid that it leads to dogma.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, it means a fixed, especially religious, belief or set of beliefs that people are expected to accept without any doubts…
I see it happening many times, especially in forums and Facebook groups.
Every once in a while, there’s a heated argument between people who strongly believe in life after death and those that don’t.
People that believe in energy healing versus those that don’t
People that belief in us being essentially of spirit vs those that don’t
And people are expected to conform to all the tenets of spirituality as if this were one of the 10 commandments….
And if they don’t?…
Well, then you’re just not spiritual?
I mean, haven’t you read enough?
Don’t you watch documentaries?
Don’t you know the truth?
Haven’t you experienced an awakening yet?
See what I mean?…
While there are those that have genuinely good intentions, there are some that consider themselves…..superior or above the rest.
I mean I’ve heard of people who consider themselves spiritual who go to yoga sessions, and meditate, and do energy healing sessions…
as soon as that’s done?…
They’ll talk behind someone’s back or gossip about someone.
Or they get back into their ways of manipulation….
And just this feeling of ‘im better than you’..
I’m not saying that it’s you, Action tribe..
But there are folks like that, and you know it!
There is just this natural progression where a spirit of inquiry and seeking turns into dogma and adherence to law.
It happens among historians..
It happens in the scientific community..
It sure happens among the religious communities…
Where as soon as someone goes against the commonly held beliefs, they’re considered strange and they’re attacked for what they believe to be true…
And I’m worried that it’s happening in the spiritual community too.
And there’s a danger in this..
Because it prevents an open, honest dialogue.
A dialogue is important Action Tribe, and everyone’s opinion must be considered.
Because we grow through dialogue..
We learn by listening to another’s opinion even though we might not agree with them…
We evolve by allowing the other person to express and share why they feel what they believe is true…
So is being spiritual enough?
Not really 🙂
We need to go beyond just being spiritual.
We need to be ‘People of the heart’.
And you might be a person of the heart and not be spiritual, which is totally fine.
I’d rather spend an evening with a person of the heart who is not spiritual, than with a ‘spiritual person’ who feels they know the ultimate truth.
If you read about it…
The more a person awakens, the more he or she realizes, how little they know mainly because of how much there is to be known.
Does that make sense?
You could be religious – a Christian, a Buddhist or adhere to some other religion.
But your intentions can be seen through your actions, interaction and your compassion.
In fact, if you’re a christian, then be the version of a christian, emulating the principles and intentions of Jesus.
If you’re a Buddhist, then be the best version of a Buddhist, recognizing the potential of Buddhahood in everyone around you…
And I know that many of you have members of your family who are religious – maybe Christian, Muslim or following some other religion.
And I get this question often, which is “How do I convince them about spirituality? How do I show them there is a god inside them?”
And my answer is….
You don’t have to convince anyone of anything.
You don’t really!
Just go to your members, hug them, have a conversation, ask them about their challenges, support them genuinely and experience a sense of oneness with them.
“You don’t have to convince or convert anyone”…
Because if you genuinely care and establish a heart to heart connection, they will ask you…
“Hey, what is a chakra?”
Or “Can you teach me about Yoga?”
Or “Can you do some energy healing on me?”
Because it’s hard to confide in someone and its hard to change your beliefs, especially if that’s what you’ve believed your entire life.
It’s hard to leave friends and family, knowing fully well that they, in many ways, are your foundation, your support system and your roots.
So feel for them….
And support them wherever they are on their own journey.
So AJ, if being spiritual is not enough?..
Then what should as aspire to be?..
That’s a great question Action tribe and I’m glad you asked.
Here are few things I always keep in mind…
- The Heart: Use your heart to initiate a genuine, compassionate dialogue, free of judgment, resentment or aggression.
- Use your intuition and your gut: To really sense the other person’s body language, emotions and intentions, so that you can make better decisions about who to associate with, what to say, what to avoid and how to say something.
- Humility: To know that you don’t always possess the ultimate truth, but spirit is always trying send you the truth in the most uncommon places. You might receive your wisdom from your 4 year old, your distance aunt, the grocery store cashier or even from me. Be humble and open to receiving.
- Seeking spirit: Dont fall in love with what you already know. Always be seeking for the truth, even if that means that you might be proven wrong. This mindset will transform your energy as you genuinely look in new areas and new groups for that piece of wisdom.
- Mutual respect over mutual tolerance: I see a lot of establishments and authorities talk about mutual tolerance, but I feel there’s a difference between mutual tolerance and mutual respect.
Mutual tolerance means….
I’m going to tolerate your beliefs, your ideas and your way of life until I get an opportunity to convince and convert you into my way of thinking…. because my way is the ultimate truth.
Mutual respect is….
About respecting your way of life, your ideas, your principles, and engaging in dialogue, so that we together can come to a new understanding of life.
In other words, I’m not trying to convince you of my way. You are fine, perfect and special, just the way you or your people are.
